Tama tu ki te ao ka ora:

Those who forge lasting relationships bring success to all.

As a family and a company Mills-Albert live by the whakatauki: Tama tu moke ka mate, tama tu ki te ao ka ora – Those who forge on alone will struggle, but those who forge lasting relationships bring success to all.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

Mount Taranaki, renowned for its distinctive volcanic features, has provided the region with rich and fertile farmland by the weathering of volcanic ash mixed with the soil. The area around the location of our Wiremu Road based Rock farm, is part of the Taranaki Volcanic Ring Plain and has been subject to several volcanic events that resulted in Lahar and Block Ash deposits. This includes Andesite composites in the form of rock boulders. It is also in the area of one of the most recent volcanic events. This occurred approximately 7500 years ago when the Opua Debris Avalanche Deposit covered the land with large quantities of Andesite Rock. The characteristics of these deposits offer a distinctive rock that complies with the certain requirements associated with Rock suitable for use as Rip Rap in Coastal and River Protection situations.

At Mills Albert, our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship is paramount. Through conscientious recycling and reutilisation of materials in our projects, we not only reduce costs and landfill waste but also showcase our dedication to environmental preservation. Noteworthy examples include the transformation of excavated material into raised garden features at Poets Park and the repurposing of Kelly blocks and rocks into distinctive features. This commitment has earned us the esteemed 2023 Electra Business and Innovation Award.

The Mills Albert Whānau

Mills Albert Ltd has been involved in Rock Scalping operations since 2006 when we started supplying rock out of 3 sources within the Central Plateau. From the initial beginnings we progressed in 2016 and also became involved in rock extraction in Taranaki inland from Opunake. Our journey to obtain the Mills Albert Rock Farm began with our association with these other sources in the area and subsequently, as part of our ongoing strategic planning, a decision was made to plan for and obtain a source of our own within the same region. Rock in a farming sense is not conducive to productive grazing or crop management.

Over a period of time, we found a dairy farm that was for sale and due to the presence of surface rock made it hard to farm. This is where we commenced our mission to enhance the farm to create a more productive operation. Predominantly this was by improving pasture to increase gazing opportunity and therefore increased milk-fat production.

Along the way we take pride in supplying large-scale Rip Rap directly sourced from our own farm to other regions within Te Ika-a-Māui (North Island). This ensures the authenticity and reliability of the natural rock we provide, distinguishing us in the industry.

Owning the source is our pledge. By removing the need for external suppliers and quarry blasting, we exercise complete control over the extraction and delivery process. This allows us to uphold impeccable standards, adapt efficiently to customer needs, and prioritise sustainability and environmental responsibility. The Mills Albert Rock Farm boasts significant supply capacity, capable of delivering rock in substantial volumes for even the most expansive projects across the North Island. Strategically situated in a rock-rich area, our farm ensures an efficient and uninterrupted rock supply, countering concerns about sustainable rock scarcity.
