Port Road ( Te Awa Kairangi )
As the main contractor for Greater Wellington Regional Council, we delivered the Port Road Climate Resilience Project, the final stage of a wider programme of resilience works along Te Awa Kairangi, completed on schedule in May 2023.
The project involved strengthening and rebuilding approximately 530 metres of coastal protection to help prevent erosion and protect Port Road, surrounding businesses and critical infrastructure from the impacts of waves and flooding.
Key works included:
- Profile excavation and preparation
- Placement of approximately 16,000 tonnes of rock armour and rip rap
- Removal and management of existing concrete protection
- Coastal revetment reconstruction
- Environmental protection measures, including silt curtains
- Traffic management and contraflow operations
- Penguin monitoring, protection and habitat restoration
While the construction methodology itself was straightforward, the project presented significant logistical and environmental challenges, at peak production, the team was managing and placing approximately 400 tonnes of rock per day, requiring careful coordination of deliveries, machinery and material placement.
Environmental management was a key part of the project. Silt curtains were installed to help prevent sediment entering Te Awa Kairangi and the surrounding coastal environment. The team also worked closely around the local penguin population, with surveys completed prior to construction to identify nesting areas and plan works around the breeding season. Where required, work was adjusted to protect nesting penguins, and dedicated penguin habitats were installed as part of the rebuilt coastal protection.
